Everyone gossips because we all occasionally talk about someone who is not present in the conversation. Gossiping is human, so saying that it’s not allowed is pointless. Instead, it’s important to understand why we gossip and how to prevent your gossip from causing harm or hurt to others.
Learning goals:
Students understand that gossiping is human.
Students comprehend the consequences of gossiping.
Students learn how to prevent negative gossiping.
Students understand the benefits of gossiping.
None. The students are going to have a group discussion about gossiping. Use the questions under ‘Discussion’ to lead the discussion.
To facilitate the discussion, you can use the following questions:
What do you do when a negative gossip is circulating about you? What if it’s true/untrue?
What could be the consequences of gossiping? (exclusion, negative self-images, bullying)
What role do social media play in gossiping? (anonymous gossip, constant vulnerability due to having your phone with you all the time)
Which gossips are acceptable, and which are not? How do you determine this?
